Update & Support Packages

Do I need to renew the update and support package for my permanent licenses?

It is entirely up to you if you choose to renew your update and support package. If you buy a permanent license and choose not to renew, you will still have access to SnapGene but will no longer receive updates. SnapGene is in active development, and we periodically release new features and enhancements, prioritized by customer feedback. SnapGene is designed by working scientists, and the software is evolving along with the field, so many customers find value in continuing to receive automatic updates.

After I have owned permanent licenses for a year, can I delay before purchasing additional updates?

Yes, but you receive the best value by renewing your contract right away, because the price is calculated based on the previous expiration date. For example, if you wait 12 months after your contract expires and then purchase another 12 months of updates, the price will be the same as if you had purchased 24 months of updates when your contract first expired.

If I add more licenses after the initial purchase, can I still get the progressive discount?

Yes. Upgrade cost = (Price of package you are upgrading to) – (Price of package you are upgrading from). For example, if you purchase an academic subscription license 3-pack for $595 and then upgrade to a 6-pack, the upgrade price will be $400.

How does upgrading to a larger license pack affect my expiration date?

Each new license comes with 12 months of subscription or updates, but for simplicity, these months are allocated so that all licenses have the same expiration date. For example, if you purchase an annual subscription 3-pack and then upgrade 6 months later to a 6-pack, the 3 original licenses will each have 6 remaining months while the 3 new licenses will each have 12 remaining months, so all 6 licenses will be valid for 9 months after the upgrade. This way, we can ensure that you always get exactly what you pay for.

Education Packs

An education pack is a set of 10 or more SnapGene licenses that can be used for the duration of an academic term. The licenses may be installed on departmental computers in a teaching lab, or on the students’ personal computers. The price is $25 per student per term. Contact us to arrange for educational licensing.

Who purchases the education pack licenses? The institution or students?

It is faster for us to fulfill an education pack order that is placed by the institution, but with notice, we can arrange for either option.

Can I get an education pack to support the graduate students in my lab?

No, education packs are specifically designed for individual courses.

Floating & Network Licenses

Pricing for these options is customized for your needs. Please fill out the form below to request a quote.

Can I install SnapGene on many different computers to be used by a limited number of users at once?

With floating licenses you pay for the number of simultaneous users. You may install SnapGene on as many computers as you wish. You install a license server on one computer and all copies of SnapGene connect to that computer in order to check out these simultaneous licenses.

Does SnapGene provide the license server?

We support license servers from two vendors. You may purchase Sassafras Keyserver directly from Sassafras (www.sassafras.com), or we will provide a FlexNet Publisher license server from Flexera (www.flexerasoftware.com).

What operating systems are supported by Sassafras and Flexera?

There are Mac, Windows, and Linux versions of both servers.

How hard is it to set up and run a FlexNet Publisher license server?

This is almost as simple as installing a desktop application, but not quite – it does require a little more systems administration knowledge. You will need to send us the MAC address of your server so that we can give you a server license file. You will need to manage the connections within the computers on your own network. If you wish to run the server as a background process you may need to be able to run a few commands in a terminal. There is a web interface to tell you how many copies of SnapGene are in use, and terminal commands to list the computers in use and force licenses to quit.

Do I need to be on my institution's local network to use a floating license?

No. The floating licenses only require the computer running SnapGene to connect to the computer running the license server. You can be anywhere with an internet connection as long as the server is configured to accept the connection from the SnapGene client.
